How We Keep Our Home Clean and Safe with a New Little Human

Updated: Oct 18

Bringing a baby into the world changes everything—including how you clean your home.

Before becoming a parent, I didn’t think too much about the ingredients in my cleaning sprays, what kind of soap we used, or whether there were synthetic fragrances in the air. But now, with a tiny human crawling around, chewing on everything in sight, and breathing in what we breathe… I look at our home through a whole new lens.

Here’s how we try to keep our space clean, safe, and healthy—without compromising on our baby’s well-being or our peace of mind.

1. No Harsh Chemicals in Our Cleaning Routine

We’ve made a conscious effort to avoid harmful cleaning products—especially those with harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, or ingredients we can’t pronounce.

Instead, we stick to:

  • Natural, non-toxic cleaners

  • DIY options like vinegar, baking soda, and castile soap

  • Plant-based brands that are baby-safe and eco-conscious

It gives me peace of mind knowing our baby can crawl across the floor without being exposed to residues that could irritate their skin or lungs.

2. We Use Natural Soaps and Detergents

From dish soap to laundry detergent, we’ve switched to gentle, fragrance-free options that are free from sulfates, dyes, and synthetic additives.

Our go-to choices:

  • Unscented laundry detergent for baby clothes and bedding

  • Natural bar soaps or castile soap for washing bottles and pacifiers

  • Foaming hand soaps with essential oils instead of artificial scents

It might seem like a small change, but it’s made a big difference—especially with sensitive baby skin!

3. No Artificial Fragrances in the House

We’ve eliminated things like air fresheners, scented candles, and plug-ins. Instead, we keep our air fresh and clean by:

  • Opening windows for airflow

  • Using essential oils in a diffuser (safe, gentle ones only!)

  • Boiling a pot of citrus and herbs for natural fragrance

  • Bake a batch of cookies (my favorite way to make the house smell amazing)

It keeps the house smelling clean without pumping the air full of unnecessary chemicals—because if I wouldn’t want my baby inhaling it, why should I?

4. We Avoid Highly Processed Foods and Sugar

Clean living isn’t just about what’s outside the body—it’s about what goes in, too. As a family, we try to avoid ultra-processed foods, sugary snacks, and artificial ingredients.

We focus on:

  • Whole foods and homemade meals

  • Low-sugar snacks (especially for our little one)

  • Reading labels and choosing ingredients we recognize

Even as a tired mom, I’ve found that simple, real food is the easiest and most nourishing choice—plus, it sets a healthy foundation for our baby’s eating habits.

5. We Choose Progress Over Perfection

Do we do everything perfectly? Not even close.

Some days, the laundry piles up, the floors don’t get mopped, and we eat leftovers three times in a row. But we’re trying. We’re learning. And we’re making intentional choices that feel right for our family and our little one’s health.

It’s not about being the “perfect crunchy mom” or having an Instagram-worthy home—it’s about creating a safe, loving, and toxin-light environment where our baby can grow and thrive.

A List of Cleaning Products We Use in Our Home

Becoming a parent opened my eyes to so many things I used to overlook—like what we clean with, what we breathe in, and what we eat.

If you’re on a similar journey, just know: every small change you make adds up. Whether it's switching your detergent or tossing out that last plug-in air freshener, you’re doing something powerful for your family.

And that matters.
