The Best Baby Clothes We’ve Bought Through Each Season

When we were preparing for our baby, I remember feeling overwhelmed by how many clothing options there were. Tiny jeans? Fancy outfits? Matching sets? In reality, what mattered most to us was keeping our baby comfortable, warm, and easy to change — especially in those early months.

Our little one was born in the winter, so comfort and warmth were our top priorities. Most days, he lived in cozy two-way zip footie pajamas with built-in mittens. The two-way zippers made diaper changes so much easier (especially in the middle of the night), and the fold-over mittens helped protect his little face from scratches. During awake time, we’d take the mittens off so he could start exploring and feeling with his hands.

We also loved baby gowns for nighttime when it wasn’t too cold. They made diaper changes so much simpler — no buttons or zippers to fumble with in the dark! I learned quickly that outfits with lots of buttons are cute but not practical at 2 a.m.

By the time our baby was around 4–6 months old, the weather started to warm up, and he was rolling and crawling. We stopped using mittens, and most of his pajamas became footless, giving him the freedom to use his hands and feet to explore and build those early motor skills.

When he started pulling up to stand around six months, we wanted him to practice balance naturally — so we avoided socks, shoes, or footed outfits whenever possible. Feeling the floor with his bare feet really helped him learn coordination.

From then on, our go-to clothing has been all about comfort and movement — soft cotton onesies, tees, and shorts in the warmer months, and loose, cozy layers as temperatures drop again. We usually size up a bit for extra comfort and longer wear.

Now that winter is around the corner again, we’re focusing on keeping him warm while still giving him freedom to move. Socks are back in rotation — but we stick to pairs with grips or use them with shoes so he doesn’t slip as he toddles around.

If you’re a new parent trying to figure out what clothes are actually worth buying, my biggest advice is: keep it simple and practical. Babies grow fast, and comfort really is key.

I’ve linked some of our favorite baby clothes we’ve used throughout each stage — from newborn to one year — that have truly made life easier and cozier for both of us.
